On Saturday 20th September 2008 we held a baptismal service at Brook Street Chapel. On this occasion, we baptised, by immersion in water, new believers who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and wish to follow his command by being baptised.
What is baptism?
The act of baptism itself is a simple, complete immersion in water. Our pool is located underneath the floorboards in the main hall of Brook Street Chapel.
Who should be baptised?
Baptism by immersion is a biblical principle, commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ and practiced by the early Church as described in the New Testament. Only those who have repented of their sins and put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus are baptised. The Bible never speaks of infant baptism – all that were baptised were old enough to understand the significance of the act. God’s Word never envisages an unbaptised believer. The longest recorded delay was in the case of the apostle Paul, who waited for three days until he regained his sight after his conversion. Others, such as the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8, were baptised immediately after they had placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Why should one be baptised?
- It is the Lord’s command. If we wish to be obedient to our Saviour, then we should be obedient to His command (Matthew 28:19) and His example (Matthew 3:13-16).
- It is a public, visible acknowledgement of a private, invisible transaction. No one can see if you put your faith in the Lord Jesus, so the act of baptism is a witness to your new faith (Acts 8:27-39).
- It is an identification with the Lord Jesus Christ. Baptism symbolises our death to sin, burial and resurrection into new life with the Lord Jesus, acknowledging that His saving work on the cross makes a difference in our own lives (Romans 6:4-6).
Baptism is not necessary for salvation, but it is the Lord’s command to all those who seek to follow Him and is the first step in committing one’s life to Him.
Can I be baptised?
Believers’ baptism is only for those who are have put their trust in the Saviour to forgive their sins, and who want to commit themselves to Him, and as such is not something to be entered into lightly. If you wish to be baptised, please contact us or speak to us when you visit the Chapel.
