Columbus Neighborhoods: Family and Community History

[email protected][email protected]!>>WE’RE PLAYING DETECTIVE TO PIECE TOGETHER LOST AND FORGOTTEN STORIES. THAT’S NEXT ON “COLUMBUS NEIGHBORHOODS.” [email protected][email protected]!>>Announcer: SUPPORT FOR “COLUMBUS NEIGHBORHOODS” IS PROVIDED BY –>>AT AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER, WE’VE BEEN PROUD SPONSORS OF WOSU PUBLIC MEDIA FOR MANY YEARS, AND STRONG SUPPORTERS OF OUR HEADQUARTER CITY, HERE, IN COLUMBUS — BOTH DOWNTOWN AND IN NEIGHBORHOODS LIKE YOURS.>>STATE AUTO INSURANCE COMPANIES, SERVING CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITIES FOR NEARLY A CENTURY. OHIO HEALTH FOCUSES ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WITH A MISSION TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITIES. AND BY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THESE AND OTHER COLUMBUS AREA FAMILIES WHO SUPPORT WOSU. THANK YOU.>>BACK BEFORE CAMERA PHONES, MOST OF US HAD SHOEBOXES FULL OF PHOTOGRAPHS. BEECHWOLD HARDWARE’S GOT A LOT OF PHOTOS IN THEIR DEEP HISTORY IN CLINTONVILLE. OUR OLD PHOTOGRAPHS ARE ALWAYS FUN TO LOOK THROUGH BUT A FEW FACES ARE LOST TO US, THEIR STORIES LONG GONE BECAUSE WE JUST DIDN’T WRITE THEM DOWN. IN THIS EPISODE WE ARE DIGGING DEEP INTO THAT SHOEBOX TO LOOK AT WAYS TO PIECING TOGETHER STORIES AND PRESERVING WHAT WE HAVE. OUR FIRST SEGMENT IS ABOUT A NEIGHBORHOOD CALLED LITTLE OKLAHOMA. WAS IT NAMED FOR OKIES THAT CAME HERE AFTER THE DUSTBOWL? WELL WE DON’T KNOW. SO WE SENT HISTORIAN DOREEN UHAS SAUER TO FIND OUT.>>WE’RE STANDING IN LITTLE OKLAHOMA WHICH IS KIND OF A STRANGE NAME FOR COLUMBUS. WE’RE GOING TO INVESTIGATE HOW IT CAME TO BE CALLED THAT. WHAT’S KIND OF INTERESTING ABOUT THIS AREA IS THAT IT’S SO INTIMATELY TIED WITH SOUTH SIDE COLUMBUS. THIS IS THE AREA WHERE PEOPLE CAME TO FIND WORK IN COLUMBUS. SO WE ARE GOING TO BE GOING ON A LITTLE ADVENTURE THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD. WE’RE GOING TO SEE SOME OF SIGHTS THAT ARE HERE, AND WE’RE GOING TO FIND OUT ABOUT ITS HISTORY. I’M HERE WITH ROBIN WATSON FROM THE FAR SOUTHSIDE AREA COMMISSION, AND I’M HOPING SHE’S GOING TO TELL ME A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. WHAT ARE ITS JOYS AND WHAT ARE ITS CHALLENGES?>>WELL THE JOYS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS THAT ONE — IT’S A VERY TIGHT NIT NEIGHBORHOOD HERE. THEY ARE VERY RESOURCEFUL PEOPLE. THERE’S NOT A LOT OF LINES FOR ASSISTANCE, THINGS LIKE THAT. MOST OF THEM ARE TRADES PEOPLE. SOME OF THE CHALLENGES ARE — THIS IS A CLOISTER COMMUNITY, BUT I THINK FOR A VERY GOOD REASON. IF YOU GO TO HIGH STREET AND LOOK NORTH ON 104, THERE IS A SIGN THAT SAYS WELCOME TO THE SOUTH SIDE OF COLUMBUS. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE SOUTH SIDE. SO IF YOU’RE STANDING SOUTH OF THAT, ARE YOU STILL IN THE CITY OF COLUMBUS? ARE YOU STILL A PART OF THAT?>>SO IT’S KIND OF PART IDENTITY TOO AND RECOGNITION THAT YOU ARE HERE?>>YES.>>BEFORE IT WAS COMMUNITY, WAS IT MOSTLY FARMLAND AS FAR AS YOU KNOW?>>MOST OF THE FAR SOUTH SIDE WAS. STORY HAS IT THAT THIS AREA WAS ACTUALLY FOUNDED BY PEOPLE THAT WERE LEAVING THE DUSTBOWL.>>SO THAT WOULD PUT IT IN THE 1930’S THEN, RIGHT?>>IT WOULD.>>AND DO YOU KNOW ANYONE PERSONALLY OR FAMILIES, OR IS THIS A STORY THAT’S BEEN PAST DOWN. I KNOW A LOT OF RESIDENTS THAT HAVE LIVED HERE AWHILE.>>EVEN FROM THEM, FROM LONG TIME RESIDENTS?>>YES, MA’AM. [email protected][email protected]!>>I WANTED TO FIND A RESIDENT WHO HAS LIVED HERE LONG ENOUGH THAT COULD HELP US FIND SOME DUSTBOWL CONNECTION. I FOUND JACK SEYMORE. WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHERE DID YOU GO FOR ICE CREAM OR CONFECTIONARIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT?>>MAX’S WAS OUR STORE.>>I KNEW YOU WOULD REMEMBER SOMETHING.>>MAX’S WAS OUR STORE. HE WOULD RUN A BILL FOR PEOPLE AND YOU COULD PAY HIM ON FRIDAY. HE HELPED –>>REALLY OLD FASHIONED.>>HE HELPED A LOT OF THE FAMILIES GET THROUGH. THEN THERE WAS ANOTHER LITTLE ONE ON THE OTHER SIDE, ON THE CORNER OF FIFTH STREET.>>OKAY, HAVE YOU HEARD THE NAME LITTLE OKLAHOMA?>>YES, YES. WE GREW UP HERE, I HAVE FAMILY ON SEVENTH STREET. MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER, SHE LIVED INTO HER 90S. TWO BIG FAMILIES THAT I REMEMBER THEM SAYING THAT WERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT STARTED IT. GREAT GRANNY WAS IN HERE 90S.>>AND THAT WAS THE STORY SHE TOLD YOU?>>YEAH. [email protected][email protected]! I’M MEETING UP WITH ANGELA O’NEIL AND AARON O’DONOVAN FROM THE COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY TO SEE WHAT THE ARCHIVES MIGHT SAY ABOUT LITTLE OKLAHOMA.>>WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE DUSTBOWL, IT’S AN AREA IN THE UNITED STATES AROUND OKLAHOMA AND THE TEXAS PANHANDLE THAT EXPERIENCED A HORRIFIC DROUGHT BETWEEN 1934 AND 1937. OVER TWO MILLION PEOPLE LEFT THAT AREA OF THE COUNTRY. ABOUT 10% OF THEM WENT TO CALIFORNIA, THE REST SCATTERED ALL ACROSS THE U.S. SO IT’S POSSIBLE THAT SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE COULD HAVE ENDED UP IN COLUMBUS. SO WHAT WE WANTED TO DO WAS TAKE A LOOK AT THE CENSUS AND SEE IF WE CAN SHOW THAT. THIS FIRST BATCH OF RECORDS IS THE CENSUS FROM 1930. WHY WE WANTED TO LOOK AT 1930 WAS TO SHOW WHO WAS LIVING HERE AT THAT TIME BEFORE THE DUSTBOWL, AND THEN WE WANT TO LOOK AT 1940 TO SEE WHAT’S CHANGED. WHAT WE SEE IN THE 1930 CENSUS, IT WILL TELL US OF THE PLACE OF BIRTH OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND BOTH THEIR PARENTS. WE SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM OHIO, WEST VIRGINIA FOLKS HERE. SOME TENNESSEE. THERE IS EVEN AN ALABAMA. LOTS OF FOLKS FROM KENTUCKY AS WE SCROLL THROUGH THESE PAGES. SO WE ARE REALLY SEEING A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT HAS A STRONG APPALACHIAN INFLUENCE, AND EVEN A SOUTHERN INFLUENCE. SO WE WOULD EXPECT TO SEE, WITH THE DUSTBOWL HAPPENING IN THAT 1934 TO 1937 TIME PERIOD, WE WOULD EXPECT THE 1940 TO SEE THESE PEOPLE, BUT A LOT OF FOLKS FROM THAT OKLAHOMA REGION AS WELL. AND INTERESTING QUIRK OF THE CENSUS, IS THAT IN THE 1940 CENSUS BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH MOVEMENT HAPPENING IN THE UNITED STATES AT THAT TIME, THEY ADDED A QUESTION TO THE CENSUS. IT ASKS WHAT WAS YOUR RESIDENCE ON APRIL 1, 1935. SO THAT’S THE COLUMN THAT WE SHOULD SEE OKLAHOMA, RIGHT. IN THIS COLUMN, UNFORTUNATELY, WE SEE A WHOLE LIST OF PEOPLE HERE WHO LISTED AS SAME PLACE. WE DID FIND ONE PERSON WHO WAS BORN IN OKLAHOMA, CECIL SWORD, RIGHT HERE IN THE DOCUMENTS. UNFORTUNATELY, BECAUSE WE HAVE THAT QUESTION OF WHERE WERE YOU IN 1935, HE WAS IN THE SAME PLACE. SO HE WAS IN COLUMBUS IN 1935. SO OTHER THAN THAT, NOT A LOT OF EVIDENCE FOR A SIGNIFICANT MOVEMENT OF FOLKS FROM OKLAHOMA — DIRECTLY FROM OKLAHOMA TO OHIO. THE NEXT PIECE OF INFORMATION THAT WE DO NOT HAVE IS THE 1950 CENSUS. THE 1950 CENSUS WILL COME OUT IN 2020, SO WE WILL KNOW THE ANSWER THEN. THE NEXT STEP IS TO LOOK FOR LAND RECORDS.>>THE FIRST THING I WANTED TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS LITTLE OKLAHOMA SECTION IS ACTUALLY WHAT IT WAS ACTUALLY CALLED. THE SOUTH SIDE GARDENS WAS PLATTED IN 1922, AND IT WAS DEVELOPED BY A MAN NAMED ROY EMERSON BETTS. MY FIRST NATURAL REACTION WAS THE BETTS FAMILY FROM OKLAHOMA, THE PEOPLE WHO FOUNDED IT. AND I LOOKED UP THE BETTS FAMILY AND I SAW NO OKLAHOMA CONNECTION THERE. I ALSO SAW A LOT OF PLACES THERE NAMED AFTER THE FORNOF FAMILY. AGAIN, I WANTED TO SEE IF THAT WAS AN OKLAHOMA CONNECTION, AND I DID NOT SEE AN OKLAHOMA CONNECTION THERE. I WAS LOOKING AT THIS FAMILY CALLED THE MARKOS FAMILY WHO OWNED A LITTLE BARBECUE RESTAURANT, AND JUST BY CHANCE I WANTED TO SEE WHERE THEY WERE FROM. IT SAYS THAT ORIGINALLY THEY WERE FROM GREECE, WHICH MAKES SENSE THE LAST NAME MARKOS IS GREEK. AND I WAS LOOKING ON THERE AND IT SAID THEY HAD BEEN IN OHIO FOR AWHILE, AND WHEN I WAS ON ANCESTRY.COM IT SUGGESTED A RECORD FOR PETER MARKOS THAT THERE WAS A NATURALIZATION RECORD FROM OKLAHOMA. WHAT I DID WAS I PULLED THAT RECORD UP AND FOUND HIS NATURALIZATION RECORD IN THE YEAR 1909. WHAT I ENDED UP DOING WAS GOING TO THE CITY DIRECTORIES. I DID FIND HIS BROTHER GUS MARKOS WAS HERE IN 1907, BUT I DIDN’T SEE PETER MARKOS HERE UNTIL 1909, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN AFTER HIS NATURALIZATION. NOW, I’M NOT FOR CERTAIN IF THIS IS THE SAME PETER MARKOS, BUT IT DID TAKE ME ABACK BECAUSE THERE WAS AN OKLAHOMA CONNECTION OUT OF THE BLUE WHEN I WASN’T LOOKING FOR IT.>>SO WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE MARKOS FAMILY SO FAR IS THAT THEY ARE GREEK IN ORIGIN, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME MOVEMENT THROUGH OKLAHOMA, AT LEAST BY ONE FAMILY MEMBER. AND THAT THEY SET UP A LITTLE BARBECUE ON SOUTH HIGH.>>AND IN THE CITY DIRECTORIES IT LATER BECOMES A CONFECTIONARY STORE OR A CANDY SHOP.>>WELL WE MAY HAVE FOUND THE OKLAHOMA CONNECTION.>>NOTHING IS DEFINITIVE, BUT THE EVIDENCE IS POINTING MORE TOWARDS THIS STORY RATHER THAN THE DUSTBOWL STORY OF THE 1930’S. [email protected][email protected]!>>NOW THAT WE HAVE FOUND A POSSIBLE OKLAHOMA CONNECTION WITH THE MARKOS FAMILY, I’VE TRACKED DOWN A DESCENDENT OF GUS AND PETER, STEVE MARKOS. AND I’M MEETING HIM AT SHAY’S RESTAURANT TO LEARN MORE.>>MY GRANDFATHER AND GREAT UNCLE CAME FROM GREECE HERE IN 1902. THEY MOVED TO INDIANAPOLIS, THEY WORKED AT THE RAILROAD FOR $5 A MONTH. THAT WAS UP THROUGH 1905 TO 1906, AND THEN IN 1910 THEY OPENED THIS STORE WITH A MAN NAMED JOHN STIMATUS, AND HE’S PICTURED HERE WITH MY GRANDFATHER ALONG WITH A GUY NAMED ANTHONY ZINETIS, WHICH WAS THE FOUNDER OF ANTHONY THOMAS CANDY COMPANY.>>WHAT A SMALL WORLD.>>THIS WAS MY GREAT UNCLE AND THIS WAS INSIDE THAT BUILDING.>>OH WOW.>>THIS WAS AT THE CORNER OF PARKWOOD AND EAST BROAD STREET, WHERE EAST HIGH SCHOOL SITS TODAY. AND THEN THEY SETTLED DOWN HERE IN 1924, THEY SETTLED IN THEIR BIG HOUSE AT IS ACROSS THE STREET HERE. IN 1925, THIS BUILDING WAS BUILT –>>THIS BUILDING RIGHT –>>THIS BUILDING WAS HERE, THE ORIGINAL PART OF IT. THESE PICTURES ARE FROM AROUND 1940 WHEN THEY WERE MAKING HIGH STREET FROM TWO LANE TO FOUR LANE. MY GREAT UNCLE DIED 1953, AND IN 1954, MY DAD OPENED UP WHAT WE CALLED THREE TREES DRIVE IN. AND THEN DAD LEASED TO A GUY NAME JACK SHADE. SO, IT’S BEEN SHADE SINCE 1967.>>WHEN DID YOU HEAR THAT THIS WAS CALLED LITTLE OKLAHOMA?>>WELL, YOU KNOW, GROWING UP, I HAD HEARD IT. I MEAN, I’VE ALWAYS KNOWN IT WAS LITTLE OKLAHOMA. I TALKED TO A FRIEND OF A FAMILY FRIEND NAMED MIL — HE GAVE ME THE RUNDOWN ABOUT HOW THIS BECAME LITTLE OKLAHOMA AND PEOPLE MOVING FROM THE DUSTBOWL AREA. HE WAS TOLD THAT COLUMBUS WAS KNOWN AS THE GATEWAY TO THE EAST. A LOT OF PEOPLE CAME THROUGH THIS WAY AND THEY FOUND WORK HERE. AND THEY FOUND CHEAP HOUSING. I ASKED MILTON WHERE HE HAD LEARNED THIS STUFF AND HE SAID, “WELL, YOU KNOW, I LEARNED THAT FROM YOUR DAD.”>>WONDERFUL. THIS IS WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR. WE HAVE FOUND CONNECTION BETWEEN A MEMBER OF THE MARCOS FAMILY IN OKLAHOMA, BUT WE HAVE NOT YET SEEN A LARGE MIGRATION OF PEOPLE FROM OKLAHOMA AND THE DUSTBOWL INTO THE SOUTHSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD KNOWN AS LITTLE OKLAHOMA. WE KNOW THAT THE 1950 CENSUS WILL BE RELEASED SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE AND THAT MIGHT PROVIDE US WITH MORE ANSWERS. BUT, IN THE MEAN TIME, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP HEARING FAMILY STORIES TO SEE WHAT CONNECTIONS WE CAN MAKE. SO, IF YOU HAVE TO HAPPEN TO HAVE STORIES ABOUT LITTLE OKLAHOMA AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THEM, PLEASE DO SO ON “COLUMBUS NEIGHBORHOOD’S” FACEBOOK PAGE.>>>HISTORIANS AGREE THAT PEOPLE WHO COULD AFFORD A CAMERA TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR A PEN TO WRITE STORIES DOWN HAVE PRESERVED A LOT OF WHAT WE KNOW OF OUR COLLECTIVE HISTORY. MOST PEOPLE WERE TYPICALLY MIDDLE TO UPPER CLASS, SO MINORITIES HAVE LARGELY BEEN LEFT OUT. BUT, RESEARCHERS AND PRESERVATIONISTS ARE NOW WORKING HARD TO FIND EVIDENCE TO TELL THOSE STORIES. THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN DIGITAL COLLECTION AT THE COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY HAS GREAT PROMISE FOR BRINING FORGOTTEN STORIES TO LIFE. TAKE A LOT AT A PIECE THE LIBRARY COMMISSIONED WOSU TO PRODUCE TO INTRODUCE THIS VALUABLE COLLECTION.>>>WIL HAYGOOD HAS WRITTEN BOOKS ABOUT SOME OF THE MOST FASCINATING PEOPLE OF THE 20TH CENTURY. IN “THE HAYGOODS OF COLUMBUS” WIL HAYGOOD WROTE ABOUT HOW GROWING UP IN COLUMBUS WAS A PART OF HIS STORY. JUST LIKE HAYGOOD, YOU CAN USE THE COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY AFRICAN-AMERICAN DIGITAL COLLECTION TO EXPLORE MANY STORIES. JAMES POINDEXTER WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST LEADERS IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY. HE WAS AN ABOLITIONIST, A POLITICIAN, AND LEAD ONE OF THE FIRST BLACK CONGREGATIONS IN COLUMBUS.>>HE WAS INFLUENTIAL WITH THE CITY AS FAR AS BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE CITY COUNCIL. AND HE MET MANY OF THE PEOPLE AT THE STATEHOUSE AND SO HE WAS AWARE OF WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE CITY.>>COLUMBUS WAS IMPORTANT TO MANY AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE 1800’S. IT WAS PART OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD.>>ARE YOU READY TO GO?>>THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD WAS A VERY CLANDESTINE, WAS VERY SECRETIVE AND HIGHLY ILLEGAL OPERATION. SO, THOSE WHO WERE INVOLVED WITH IT REALLY TOOK THEIR LIVES IN THEIR OWN HANDS.>>USE THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN DIGITAL COLLECTION TO STUDY HOW THE GREAT MIGRATION EFFECTED COLUMBUS WHEN THOUSANDS OF BLACKS LEFT THE POVERTY AND OPPRESSION OF THE SOUTH FOR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE INDUSTRIALIZED NORTH.>>THE RAILROADS WERE LOCATED JUST NORTH OF THE CITY. THE RAILROADS NO DOUBT GAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO THOUSANDS OF BLACK LABORERS.>>THESE AFRICAN-AMERICANS LIVED IN A SEGREGATED COLUMBUS. MANY OF THEM WERE CONCENTRATED IN COMMUNITIES OF THEIR OWN MAKING.>>THERE WAS AN OLD HANFORD VILLAGE THAT WAS THERE PROBABLY IN THE LATE 1800’S AND EARLY 1900’S. AND IT HAD ITS OWN POLICE FORCE, FIRE CHIEF, STORES. I MEAN IT WAS JUST A CONTAINED LITTLE COMMUNITY. IT WAS DESTROYED IN THE EARLY ’70’S WHEN I-70 CAME THROUGH.>>OF ALL THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITIES IN COLUMBUS, THE LARGEST AND MOST PROSPEROUS WAS LOCATED ON LONG STREET AND MOUNT VERNON AVENUE.>>SATURDAY WAS THE EAST MARKET. SATURDAY THE BOWLING ALLEY ON MOUNT VERNON AVENUE. SATURDAY WAS A NOVELTY FOOD BAR. BLACK COMMUNITY HAD ITS OWN BUSINESSES, ITS OWN ESTABLISHMENTS WHERE WE COULD GO SHOP AND BUY THINGS. WE HAD THOSE THINGS, NUMBER ONE BECAUSE WE WEREN’T ALLOWED TO GO DOWNTOWN FOR MANY YEARS.>>THE LIBRARY’S COLLECTIONS SHOW THAT THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN COLUMBUS IS COMPELLING, COMPLEX, AND IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING.>>IT’S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR OUR PUBLIC LIBRARY TO BE A DEPOSITORY OF INFORMATION, IMAGES, PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY IN COLUMBUS BECAUSE THERE’S SO MUCH RICH HISTORY THAT WE DON’T WANT LOST.>>AND THE COLLECTION WILL BECOME EVEN MORE ROBUST AS YOU AND OTHERS CONTRIBUTE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS AND DOCUMENTS AND HELP CHRONICLE AFRICAN-AMERICAN LIFE IN COLUMBUS.>>I JUST WANTED TO REMIND PEOPLE THAT THERE WERE COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE BEEN DEMOLISHED. THAT THE TRADITIONS AND THE CULTURE REMAIN. THEY’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. THEY MAY TAKE AWAY THE BUILDINGS, YOU MAY TAKE AWAY THE STREET SIGNS, BUT THAT CULTURE AND TRADITION AND LIFE AND WAY OF LIFE WILL ALWAYS BE.>>>RESEARCHING YOUR OWN FAMILY TREE CAN BE A FULLTIME HOBBY, BUT IT’S IMPORTANT WORK TO KEEP FAMILY STORIES ALIVE TO PASS ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. PRODUCER DIANA BERGEMANN UNCOVERED SOME TIPS TO START THE PROCESS.>>>THERE ARE A LOT OF RESOURCES ONLINE TO RESEARCH GENEALOGY, BUT DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A WHOLE DEPARTMENT AT THE COLUMBUS PUBLIC LIBRARY DOWNTOWN DEDICATED TO LOCAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY? LET’S CHECK IT OUT. [email protected][email protected]!>>HEY RON.>>HEY DIANE. HOW ARE YOU TODAY?>>I’M DOING GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MEETING WITH ME.>>HEY, GREAT. WELCOME TO LOCAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY.>>THANK YOU. WELL, TODAY WE’RE TALKING ABOUT GENEALOGY AND WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF GENEALOGY THEY THINK ABOUT ONLINE. BUT, I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THAT THERE’S THIS WHOLE RESOURCE AVAILABLE HERE RIGHT AT THE LIBRARY. TELL ME WHAT YOU GUYS CAN DO FOR PEOPLE AND THEIR GENEALOGY RESEARCH.>>THERE’S A LOT OF MATERIAL AVAILABLE ONLINE, BUT THERE’S A TON OF MATERIAL THAT ISN’T STILL. AND THE LIBRARY IS A GREAT PLACE TO START. WE HAVE ONE OF THE LARGEST COLLECTIONS IN THE STATE THAT CAN HELP YOU FIND THAT MATERIAL. BOTH FROM A LOCAL PROSPECTIVE AND AN INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTIVE. SO, WE HAVE A LOT OF BOOKS AND RESOURCES, INDEXES AND TRANSCRIPTIONS TO RECORDS THAT LEAD TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDS THAT YOU NEED TO FIND ABOUT YOUR ANCESTORS.>>ALL RIGHT, SO LETS TALK ABOUT GENEALOGY 101. HOW DOES SOMEONE GET STARTED DOING GENEALOGY?>>YOU NEED TWO FORMS. ONE OF THE PEDIGREE CHART WHICH HELPS YOU FIND YOUR ANCESTORS FROM YOU BACK DIRECTLY THROUGH YOUR LINE. AND THEN A FAMILY GROUP SHEET WHICH GIVES YOU MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A SPECIFIC FAMILY, SUCH THE PARENTS AND ALL THEIR CHILDREN.>>WOULD IT BE HELPFUL AND USEFUL TO GIVE IT TO SOME OF THE OLDER PEOPLE OF YOUR FAMILY?>>SURE. GIVE IT TO OTHER MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY, ESPECIALLY THE ELDERS, WHILE THEY’RE ALIVE GET THAT INFORMATION FROM THEM. AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT IF IT CONTRADICTS WHAT YOU THINK YOU MAY KNOW. IT SUPPLEMENTS WHAT YOU KNOW.>>SO IT DOES TAKE TIME AND RESOURCES AND LITTLE BIT OF MONEY ON PEOPLE’S PARTS. BUT IT’S WELL WORTH IT, AND THEN YOU CAN KIND OF GET THEM UNSTUCK WHEN THEY GET TO A POINT MAYBE ONLINE OR IN THEIR RESEARCH THAT THEY JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO GO, THAT’S WHAT YOU GUYS ARE HERE FOR. CORRECT. WE’RE ESSENTIALLY A GUIDE. WE ASSIST AND GUIDE YOU THROUGH YOUR RESEARCH. WE DON’T DO YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY HISTORY, BUT WE KIND OF GET YOU WHERE YOU NEED TO GO.>>SO WHAT I AM HEARING FROM ALL THIS IS THAT THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF LEG WORK, BUT ALSO THAT IT’S REALLY GOOD TO HAVE A GOAL IN MIND WHEN YOU’RE STARTING YOUR GENEALOGY RESEARCH. WHETHER YOU WANT TO CONNECT YOURSELF TO THE CIVIL WAR, OR YOUR ANCESTORS CAME OVER ON THE MAYFLOWER, OR A FAMOUS PERSON.>>SOME PEOPLE MAY ONLY WANT TO DO A COUPLE GENERATIONS OR AGAIN, CONNECT WITH A FAMOUS PERSON OR EVENT IN HISTORY, OR EVEN NATURAL DISASTER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THEY — YOU KNOW JOHNSTOWN FLOOD. PEOPLE HAVE A CONNECTION TO THAT, 9/11 IS THE MOST RECENT KIND OF BIG THING, THAT’S PIVOTAL IN PEOPLE’S LIVES AND YOU WANT TO KNOW THAT CONNECTION TO IT. HOW IT AFFECTED OUR LIVES AND OUR FAMILIES.>>WELL, ON THAT NOTE I AM ACTUALLY RELATED TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN. CAN YOU TELL?>>WELL THERE MAY BE A RESEMBLANCE, BUT THAT’S NOT ALL WE NEED.>>OK, SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD I AM RELATED TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN.>>OH, COOL.>>SIXTH COUSIN ON MY MOM’S SIDE. BUT AS I GET OLDER, I REALLY WANT TO CONNECT MYSELF TO THAT LINEAGE. IN THE 1970S MY FAMILY DID A BUNCH OF RESEARCH, THEY COMPILED A BOOK, SO I GRABBED THAT, I GAVE THAT TO YOU A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND YOU HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT IT. SO WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO LOOK IT OVER AND SEE WHAT I’VE GOT?>>WE CAN SURE LOOK AT THAT AND SEE WHAT WE CAN FIND.>>PERFECT, LET’S GO! [email protected][email protected]!>>ALL RIGHT, WELL HERE IT IS. SO, YOU’VE HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT MY RESEARCH OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. WHAT CAN YOU GATHER FROM IT THAT TALKS ABOUT MY FAMILY LINEAGE?>>SOME OF THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY INDICATES THAT THERE IS POSSIBLY A CONNECTION TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND IT’S THROUGH HIS MOTHER, NANCY HANKS. HER SISTER ACTUALLY MARRIED ONE OF YOUR ANCESTORS. SO YOU ARE A COUSIN OF SORTS. THERE STILL NEEDS TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF INFORMATION JUST TO VERIFY, BUT IT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD THAT YOU ARE CONNECTED WITH THEM. THIS PEDIGREE CHART KIND OF GIVES US A FEW NAMES TO LOOK AT AND CONNECT WITH AN PLACES AND THEN THE FAMILY HISTORY THAT YOU MENTIONED — THAT WE HAVE INFORMATION ON. FOR INSTANCE WE’VE GOT THIS COOL FAMILY CREST TO THE WEED FAMILY. LOOKS LIKE A WELL DOCUMENTED SOURCE. SO WITHOUT USING RESOURCES AND VERIFYING THE FACTS IN HERE AND TELLING YOU ABOUT THEM AND WHERE THEY FOUND, GIVES YOU A PRETTY GOOD IDEA, THAT THE RESEARCH IS KIND OF SOUND. YOU JUST WANT TO KIND OF TWEAK IT A LITTLE BIT, CONNECT YOURSELF BACK TO THE PEOPLE HERE.>>SO HOW DO I CONNECT MY PEDIGREE CHART, TO THE PEDIGREE CHART THAT WAS DONE BACK IN THE 1970S? WHO AM I CONNECTING TO?>>YOU JUST NEED TO CONNECT YOUR PEDIGREE TO THIS ONE HERE. WE HAPPENED TO HAVE A VIRGIL WEED, AND HE’S RELATED TO THE CHERRINGTON FAMILY. WHICH DOES GO BACK TO THE HANKS. WHICH, MARGARET HANKS WAS A SISTER TO NANCY HANKS, WHICH WAS LINCOLN’S MOTHER.>>AND ALSO VIRGIL WEED THAT IS MY GRANDFATHER’S NAME, SO THAT’S A FAMILY NAME. SO I LEARNED SOMETHING THAT THAT GOES BACK FURTHER THAN HIM.>>AND HOPEFULLY BECAUSE OF THAT CONNECTION YOU WILL CONNECT TO THIS FAMILY.>>AND PART OF THIS THAT WILL HELP ME DO MY PEDIGREE CHART IS PHYSICAL THINGS, LIKE BIRTH CERTIFICATES, DEATH CERTIFICATES, PICTURES, THINGS LIKE THAT, RIGHT?>>CORRECT. AND IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE THOSE, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO PRESERVE THOSE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.>>THANK YOU, RUSS, THIS HAS BEEN SUCH A GREAT ENLIGHTENMENT ON HOW TO DO YOUR FAMILY GENEALOGY. AND THAT’S A GREAT POINT ABOUT PRESERVING FAMILY DOCUMENTS. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! AND ACTUALLY CINDY GAYLORD IS AT THE OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION RIGHT NOW, TALKING TO THEIR EXPERTS ON HOW YOU DO THAT.>>SO LISA, I HAVE BROUGHT YOU A 1977 VINTAGE PHOTO ALBUM. IT WAS MY FIRST PHOTO ALBUM I EVER PUT TOGETHER AND I’VE GOT ISSUES. THE PHOTOS ARE STUCK IN THIS PART OF IT AND I AM AFRAID I AM GOING TO LOSE THESE PHOTOS. WHAT DO I DO?>>THE BEST CASE SCENARIO IS THAT THE ADHESIVE DRIES UP AND YOUR PHOTOS YOU CAN PEEL OFF EASILY. ONE TRICK, IF THEY’RE ALREADY FAIRLY LOOSE, WE SOMETIMES TAKE DENTAL FLOSS, UNWAXED, UNFLAVORED, UNCOLORED. IF YOU PULL IT SLOWLY BEHIND THE PICTURES ASSUMING THAT THEY’RE ALREADY STARTING TO LIFT OFF, THAT CAN BE A NICE WAY TO PEEL THEM OUT. YOU COULD SCAN THE PAGES, THEN YOU COULD GO BACK AND DO COLOR CORRECTION ON INDIVIDUAL PICTURES.>>SO THIS ISN’T ARCHIVAL MATERIAL TO KEEP THESE FOR LONGEVITY. YOU HAVE SOME OTHER THINGS HERE THAT YOU LIKE TO USE, DON’T YOU?>>WHEN YOU DO TAKE YOUR PHOTOS OUT OF AN ALBUM, THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO PUT THEM INTO. ENVELOPES ARE A POSSIBILITY, ARCHIVAL SLEEVES ARE A POSSIBILITY. I MEAN BASICALLY WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WITH THESE THINGS, IS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR POLYESTER BASED PLASTICS. POLYESTER IS CHEMICALLY INERT. IT’S STABLE. SO LONG TERM, YOU CAN PUT A PICTURE IN THIS AND THE POLYESTER IS NOT GOING TO YELLOW, IT’S NOT GOING TO BECOME BRITTLE. THEN, THE QUESTION IS, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO LABEL THINGS. WITH PHOTOS UP TO THE 60-70’S, PHOTOS ARE PRINTED ON A FIBER BASED PAPER. SO TO WRITE ON THE BACK LIGHTLY WITH PENCIL IS REALLY EASY TO DO. IT’S WHEN YOU GET TO THE 70’S, 80’S, 90’S, YOU HAVE THE CODED PHOTO PAPERS THAT ARE VERY DIFFICULT. IF YOU GET A SOFTER LEAD PENCIL AT AN ARTS SUPPLY STORE, YOU CAN WRITE ON THEM IN PENCIL AND STILL GET SOMETHING CLEAR AND READABLE.>>NOW YOU HAVE AN ALBUM THAT YOU HAVE MADE. THIS IS YOUR ALBUM.>>THIS IS REALLY NICE BECAUSE I USED PHOTO CORNERS, SO I COULD EASILY GET THESE OUT IF I WANT TO. I CAN WRITE ON THE PAGES, SO IT’S READABLE. IT’S ACID FREE PAPER, AND THEN ALSO A POLYESTER BASED PLASTIC SLEEVES.>>YOU HAVEN’T TAKEN IT SO COMPLICATED. SOME OF THESE SCRAPBOOKING PLACES ARE SO COMPLICATED. WHERE AS HERE IT’S VERY SIMPLE. YOU HAVE A DESCRIPTION OF A PHOTOGRAPH AND MAYBE SOME NAMES OF PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW. AND THAT’S ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO DO, ISN’T IT?>>FOR THE PURPOSES OF PRESERVATION, YES. A LOT OF SCRAPBOOKS INCLUDE A LOT OF STICKERS AND ADHESIVES — AND LIKE YOU CAN SEE WITH THIS, ADHESIVES FAIL OVER TIME. AND BEING AN ARCHIVIST, BEING A MUSEUM CURATOR, I TEND OF THING OF TIME AS DECADES AND CENTURIES. I’M NOT JUST CONCERNED, IS IT GOING TO BE OKAY IN A COUPLE OF YEARS, IS IT GOING TO BE OKAY IN 20, 30, 40 YEARS.>>WELL LISA WOOD, THANK YOU VERY MUCH ON GIVING US A PRIMER ON HOW TO STORE OUR PHOTOGRAPHS FOR NOT JUST NOW, NOT JUST ANOTHER GENERATION, BUT MAYBE 50 TO 100 YEARS TO COME.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH. IT WAS A PLEASURE.>>THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. AND REMEMBER, YOU CAN CATCH ALL OF OUR EPISODES ON COLUMBUSNEIGHBORHOODS.ORG. PLUS, SEE OUR STORIES ON THE WOSU MOBILE APP.
