>>WELCOME TO
“NORTH CAROLINA WEEKEND.” I’M DEBORAH HOLT NOEL. WHO HASN’T WANTED TO LEARN MORE
ABOUT THEIR OWN FAMILY HISTORY? IT’S THE ULTIMATE
PERSONAL COLLECTION. PRODUCER JULIA CARPENTER AND
“COLLECTING CAROLINA” TAKE YOU ON A FASCINATING JOURNEY INTO
OUR STATE’S ARCHIVES COLLECTIONS TO LEARN HOW TO RESEARCH YOUR
FAMILY TREE AND SEE SOME AMAZING TREASURES.>>”COLLECTING CAROLINA” IS
VISITING OUR STATE ARCHIVES WHERE THERE’S A VAST COLLECTION
OF DOCUMENTS READY FOR YOU TO DISCOVER.>>WELL, NORTH CAROLINA STARTED
REGISTERING VITAL RECORDS FORMALLY IN 1913, AND THAT WAS A
FIRST STATEWIDE EFFORT DESIGNED TO DO THAT ON A REGULAR BASIS. BEFORE THAT, YOU HAD TOWNS AND
COUNTIES THAT MIGHT REGISTER A BIRTH OR A DEATH, BUT THIS WAS
REALLY THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT THE STATE NEEDED TO KNOW WHEN
SOMEONE WAS BORN AND WHEN THEY PASSED AWAY.>>SARAH, TELL US HOW WE START
OUR GENEALOGY RESEARCH AT HOME.>>WELL, FROM OUR MAIN WEB PAGE,
YOU CAN ACCESS OUR ONLINE CATALOG WHERE YOU CAN FIND LOTS
OF INFORMATION ABOUT INDIVIDUAL RECORDS. IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE IN
SEARCHING OUR CATALOGS, WE HAVE YOUTUBE VIDEOS THAT WILL WALK
YOU THROUGH HOW TO CONDUCT A GOOD SEARCH OF THE CATALOG. WE ALSO MAKE CERTAIN RECORDS
AVAILABLE TO ancestry.com AND FAMILY SEARCH. GENEALOGY’S A POPULAR PAST TIME,
SO WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR QUEST. THE START ARCHIVES ALSO HAS
OTHER PARTNERS FOR ONLINE COLLECTIONS SUCH AS NCPEDIA,
NCMAPS, THE UNC DIGITAL HERITAGE CENTER, AND THE STATE
LIBRARY OF NORTH CAROLINA.>>ONCE YOU’VE DONE YOUR HOME
RESEARCH, YOU CAN COME TO THE STATE ARCHIVES IN RALEIGH AND
DELVE DEEPER INTO THE RECORDS.>>THIS IS OUR MAIN STACK AREA,
FULL OF COUNTY AREAS ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY COUNTY, AND
HERE YOU’LL FIND WILLS, ESTATES, COURT RECORDS, TAX LISTS FROM
ALL OVER THE STATE INCLUDING THIS WILL FROM LINCOLN
COUNTY FROM 1787. SO THIS IS OUR MICROFILM ROOM,
AND FOR GENOLOGISTS AND HISTORIANS WHO WANT TO CONDUCT
RESEARCH IN MULTIPLE COUNTIES, WE HAVE COPIES OF DEATH
CERTIFICATES, MARRIAGE RECORDS, LAND RECORDS FROM ALL ACROSS THE
STATE SO THEY CAN EASILY MOVE FROM COUNTY TO COUNTY
IN THEIR RESEARCH. WE HAVE A VAST COLLECTION OF
MAPS, OVER 5,000 MAPS. MOST HAVE BEEN DIGITIZED AND ARE
ONLINE, RANGING FROM THIS MAP FROM 1606 OF NORTH CAROLINA AND
PARTS OF VIRGINIA ALL THE WAY UP TO MODERN COUNTY MAPS. AS YOU CAN SEE, OUR MAP DRAWERS
AROUND US ARE FULL OF STATE AND LOCAL MAPS FROM A
VARIETY OF TIME PERIODS. WE ALSO HAVE A GREAT COLLECTION
OF WORLD WAR I AND WORLD WAR II POSTERS. HERE IN THE VAULTS OF THE STATE
ARCHIVES, WE PRESERVE AND MAINTAIN SOME OF THE STATE’S
MOST VALUABLE TREASURES. THIS IS THE 1776 MANUSCRIPT COPY
OF JOHN ADAMS’ THOUGHTS ON GOVERNMENT. THIS IS A 1776 LETTER OF MARQUE
SIGNED BY JOHN HANCOCK. THIS IS THE 1792
ORIGINAL PLAN OF RALEIGH. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL DIARY OF A
UNION SOLDIER WHO WAS ON A BLOCKADE SHIP OFF
THE COAST OF WILMINGTON. WHEN HE NEEDED TO ADD ADDITIONAL
PAGES, HE SIMPLY GLUED IN PAPER AND RECORDED HIS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. AND THIS IS THE 13th AMENDMENT
TO THE CONSTITUTION OUTLAWING SLAVERY.>>PRESERVING, CONSERVING, AND
PROTECTING DOCUMENTS REQUIRES NOT ONLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL BUT
ALSO A GREAT DEAL OF PATIENCE. EMILY, WHAT’S THE BEST WAY OF
PRESERVING HISTORIC DOCUMENTS?>>THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE
HISTORIC DOCUMENTS IS BY MAINTAINING A GOOD ENVIRONMENT
FOR OUR COLLECTION MATERIAL. PREVENTIVE CARE IS OUR
FRONT-LINE DEFENSE. THIS DOCUMENT HAS SEVERAL TEARS
IN IT AND NEEDS TO BE MENDED SO THAT IT CAN BE SAFELY
HANDLED BY OUR PATRONS. SO I AM REPAIRING IT WITH
JAPANESE PAPER OR LONG FIBER TISSUE AND WHEAT STARCH PASTE.>>”COLLECTING CAROLINA” LEAVES
YOU WITH TWO MORE PRECIOUS TREASURES YOU CAN FIND ONLINE
AND ARE SAFEGUARDED FOR US BY OUR STATE ARCHIVES.>>AND THIS IS THE CAROLINA
CHARTER OF 1663 FROM KING CHARLES II TO THE LORDS
PROPRIETORS, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
OF NORTH CAROLINA. AND THIS IS A 1790 LETTER FROM
GEORGE WASHINGTON TO THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA WELCOMING US
TO THE UNION AFTER WE RATIFIED THE CONSTITUTION.
