The Sylvan Lake U11 Buccaneers were crowned Central Alberta Lacrosse League Champions for their age group.

The Buccaneers topped the Olds Stingers 5-4 to capture gold.

In total the 17 kids that made up this year's team faced off against 15 other teams in the league, coach Chris Jervis said.

"The kids put in lots of work this season, hours and hours. Our kids do two on-the-floor practices per week, one dryland practice per week, whiteboard sessions, and then they do many other hours individually practicing."

He added that all the hard work paid off when the team won gold and there was a wide range of emotions.

"There was everything from the biggest wide-eyed smiles you've ever seen to the kids jumping up and down yelling and screaming to lots of tears."

About half of the team this year were second-year U11s and half were first-year U11s.

"About a third of the first-year U11s never played Lacrosse before. It's awesome to see how they really picked it up and worked hard in a sport they had never played before," Jervis said.

In the community of Sylvan Lake, Lacrosse, in general, is a growing sport.

"We're the second biggest association in the Central Alberta Lacrosse League and the sport is still rapidly growing in Sylvan Lake," he said.
